The Citizen's Eco-Hive is the Charity Brigade's contribution to saving the honeybee in the UK and helping to eradicate poverty in areas afflicted by Land-Mines and War. It achieves this by returning the beehive to the family garden, the bees to a more natural chemical free living environment and costing nothing to build and nothing to manage. Unlike commercial hives, family run eco-hives are sustainable, bee-friendly and can be built, without tools, by amateurs in a few hours. They are specifically designed for the relationship between bees and families and not for the demands of the international honey market. Spreading the knowledge of the Citizen's Hive in the Third World, however, is not so simple. 70 % of Africans, for example, do not even have access to a television. We believe by teaching our children how easy it is and by maximising the number of people who know about the Eco-Hive on the Net, that the knowledge will eventually spread. Someone, somewhere down the line, will be in the right place, at the right time, to pass on how simple it is to a family in need. Spread the word and: - Return the miracle of the Honeybee to the Master Beekeepers - the Poor - Help Save Families from the indignity of poverty by providing an income - Help those whose land has been afflicted by Land-Mines to make a living - Help Save the Bees by creating millions of healthy, chemical-free colonies The reason for the dying bee is two-fold: 1. The over-use of 19th Century hive designs that encourage farming practices designed for the mass-production of cheap, commercially produced honey, excessive cross-breeding and importations. 2. Demand beyond environmentally sustainable supply and the reliance on 20th Century pesticides, insecticides & chemicals. Unlike Victorian Industrial designs, the Zero-Cost, Citizen's Eco-Hive is chemical free and designed to be commercially unproductive. Our initial aims are to: - Replace diluted, super-market Honey with organic, locally produced Honey - Help to save the indigenous British Black Honeybee from being wiped out - Increase pollination by increasing the number of pesticide-free Eco-Hives - Begin spreading the knowledge by word of mouth and inter-net chatter. The Citizen's Eco-Hive puts the production of honey and beeswax within reach of everybody, particulary the poorest. It is also unique in that it is designed for all climates and has a projected lifespan of over fifty years. Furthermore, with natural, cylindrical chambers to which additional chambers can be supered to the top or nadired to the bottom, it is multi-functional and able to produce enough Honey, Virgin Comb, Beeswax and Propolis, without chemicals and pesticides for a large family. During World War II, Britain had over 450,000 Garden Beehives. Today there are less than 30,000. Despite the efforts of British campaigns to localise the production of honey and ban pesticides, the sale of imported, cheap, mass-produced, commercial honey continues to dominate over 90% of the market and, as a result, the Honeybee is dying. To save our honeybee, we need to rediscover the spirit of the Battle of Britain when, in just one year, families built over two hundred thousand Soapbox Beehives and over a million Anderson Shelters in their backyards, allotments and gardens. With the, Zero-Cost, Citizen's Hive we could do it again! A Britain with hundreds of thousands of bee-friendly, garden hives is a Britain with the Honeybee. |
